Q: What is Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)?
A: BIS VRI combines the power and versatility of the Internet and remotely located professional sign language interpreters to provide immediate, convenient interpreting services between Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing individuals who are in the same room. Other than some basic equipment, obtaining an interpreter via BIS VRI is easy and fast.
Q: What are the hours of service?
A: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 7:00pm ET. We honor after hour requests with a 48 hour notice and a 60 min minimum. You can find the after-hours request form here.

Q: How do I become a BIS VRI Client?
A: Click here to fill out the “New VRI Client” form. Complete the form and press "Submit". Momentarily, our coordination staff will email a welcome packet including details regarding packages, rates and guidelines. After you sign and send it back, you will receive a Client ID number enabling you to access VRI services anytime you want.
Q: How do I access my VRI service?
A: Clients either:

A: Typically, interpreters are only needed for 20-30 minutes at a time. The standard practice for agencies providing on-site interpreters is to charge a two-hour minimum plus travel time.

A: BIS VRI uses professional, qualified interpreters who are always available. No more calling a long list of interpreters hoping someone will be available. BIS VRI allows you to schedule interpreting services 24/7. On-demand VRI services are provided M - F 7:00am to 7:00pm ET. After hours requests are honored with 48 hour notice and a 60 min minimum.
Q: Do I need a login and/or Client ID number to access services?
A: Yes. You will receive your Client ID number when you become a BIS VRI client.
Q: How do I make a request for on-going interpreting needs?
A: BIS has developed an online scheduling system that is available 24/7/365 to provide greater flexibility regarding when and how you make interpreting requests. This system uses a standard Internet connection along with a standard Internet browser.
This online scheduling system updates you periodically regarding the status of your requests. In addition, automated e-mail reminders will be generated to remind you to check the status of your request(s) online.
For clients who have questions regarding request status but do not have Internet access, feel free to contact our office during normal business hours or our emergency line after hours. Normal business hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday.
Q: What equipment do I need?
A: A High Speed Internet connection, download of our recommended 'soft phone' program, an internal or external web camera, and a Mac, PC, or iOS device.
Q: What is the difference between VRS and VRI?
A: VRS is a phone call between parties who are in different locations. VRI replaces the physical presence of a live interpreter in situations in which everyone is in the same room.
Q: Is VRI compatible with a cable modem?
A. Yes. VRI is compatible with a cable modem if you have at least 256K bandwidth up and down.
Q: Can I use VRI if I am behind a firewall?
A: Yes, built-in firewall traversal and embedded encryption provide a secure video collaboration inside or outside the organization without additional equipment or IT resources.
